Until last year, approximately 300 million male chicks were killed each year in the European Union, including 50 million in France. Because they are considered useless, they are thrown alive into a crusher or suffocated or electrocuted.

This is good news for chicks from the egg industry – but not for ducklings. A decree published on Sunday puts an end to the elimination of male chicks born in the laying hen sector. Hatcheries specializing in the supply of laying hens to French breeders therefore have until the end of 2022 to stop this practice.
